Site Services and Tailings Dam Constructions

BHP Billiton Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd (now South32)

Project: Site Services and Tailings Dam Constructions
Client: BHP Billiton Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd (now South32)
Duration: 1983-2016
Location: Collie, Western Australia
Scope of work:

A typical annual scope involves the excavation to stockpile of 1.5-2 million BCM (bulk cubic metres) of zone 1 and 2 clays; unsuitable materials; topsoil’s; gravels; and rock. Around 30-40 Ha of floor construction is also undertaken each year. This required a piped groundwater drainage system, two layers of compacted clay floor, and a gravel drainage layer encasing a piped residue draining system. Decant structures and decant lines also form part of the construction scope, either on new finished floor, or raises to existing decant structures upon an upstream embankment lift. Upstream raised embankments and dividing walls are also typically constructed each year in varying degrees. Up to 700,000 m3 of material has been successfully placed, conditioned, and compacted by B&J Catalano in a given year.

Driven by their passion to pursue delivery of the best outcomes possible, B&J Catalano senior management have always demanded a very high level of integrity from their staff.”
